Knoppix still boots 2.4 by default, and has 2.6 as an option. You could also try the latest Ubuntu LiveCDs with Gnome 2.10 preview, it has DBUS, HAL, and has worked great for me at recognizing USB drives. A lot of times the support companies claim for their products is only the support given by their tech support, and the product will work fine anyways.

If the drive does not appear on the desktop after plugging it in (in Knoppix), open a shell and run "ls /dev/sd*" before and after plugging it in. If you see stuff like /dev/sda4 appear after plugging it in, it is working, but not automounting on the desktop. You'll have to "sudo mkdir /mnt/usbdrive && sudo mount /dev/sda4 /mnt/usbdrive". (this happens to me with certain USB drives in Knoppix).

Santa Fe Linux (Debian based Live CD) uses the 2.4.x kernel. http://www.santafelinux.com/

helo nick, thanks you so much, it works. after i did a bit further on your given syntax, it looks like i always have to re-type the whole syntax each
time i need to mount the flash drive, is this right?

i tried to create a shell script for the same method (except i just order it to open in konqueror), but after i unmount the flash drive and mount it again by typing; $mount /mnt/usbdrive, it didnt work. unless, i type the whole your given syntax, and must create another different folder name under /mnt. is this normal? thanks

ECGL is not liveCD as your topic said that ECGL will install them onto hard drive
