Some of my friend told me it is difficult to update kernel 2.4 to kernel 2.6 in old knoppix distribtion, is it right?
Because one of my friend modified some things in an old knoppix, its kernel is 2.4.**, and now, that LiveCD should support more hardware such as sound card , video card. So, I must compile the kernel again and again and update the new kernel. But i face many problems.
Can anyone give me some suggestions about which LiveCD i should work on , and Is it difficult for updateing kernel in Knoppix?

Knoppix has come with both kernel 2.4 and 2.6 for a while now. I'm not sure when it started, but it with the 3.8 release the 2.6 kernel is the default, while the 2.4 kernel is still on the CD. Hit F2 and F3 at the CD boot menu to see how to switch.

Also, 2.4 does not necessarily support more hardware than 2.6. I've had better support on my computers with the 2.6 kernel recently. There are also so many LiveCDs available now, if one doesn't work, you may as well download a second or third and give those a try (even different Knoppix versions if you need Knoppix).

The knoppix i used is very old, it doesn't contain kernel 2.6.**, at the same time , my friend had done a lot work of remaster on that CD, so, i really don't want to do his job again just because of the kernel.
But, most important thing for me is make this liveCD support more hardware such as sound card and video card.
It is difficult for me to decide what we should do. Update kernel from 2.4 to 2.6 base on his liveCD, or transplant his work onto latest knoppix and do remaster again.
I doublt if i should support other new hardware which need replace kernel, it is not easy for me.
Any ideas or any suggestion?

How many changes are there? If the changes to Knoppix are minor, remastering with the changes is probably better documented on the web than upgrading to a new kernel. There are probably some module changes, and the init scripts would probably need to be replaced too. You'd be making a new Knoppix distro, rather than just adding some changes to the existing Knoppix distro.

You also could test Kanotix.

There you have the 2.6.11.7 Kernel working. Kanotix is based on Knoppix but with very good scripts and an better installation.
(Knoppix 3.8 use the Kanotix installer now ...)
