The Ultimate Operating System

A minimal Live CD, linux of course, that starts vmware.
Then you can use it to install whatever OS you want to the hard drive and switch between them at will. This would remove any problems with partitioning.
All documents and music or whatever could be put in an image file on the hard drive.Probably would need some custom coding to make it all seemless.
Maybe qemu with a text user interface like the freebsd installer would be better (lighter on the resources)
Of course hardware is getting faster all the time and one day an emulator will be faster than todays computers and this live cd would run just as smooth as a native install.
Please let me know if this idea has any merit.

Hello
There is a Pre Installed Environment LiveCD (P.I.E.) that can install Windows XP through LAN.

Linux LiveCD with VMWare is IMPOSSIBLE because VMWare is a commercial product.

Perhaps the LiveCD will include Xen, but AFAIK Windows XP are not compatible with Xen.

"Xen is a virtual machine monitor for x86 that supports execution of multiple guest operating systems. Xen is Open Source software, released under the terms of the GNU General Public License. XenoLinux is a fully functional port of Linux, 2.4 and 2.6, running over Xen, for a virtual general purpose Linux server."

http://xen.epiuse.com/xen-faq.txt

Perhaps someday the mature ReactOS, FreeDOS can be ported to Xen.

Alternatives to VMWare:

SW-Soft Virtuozzo:

Plex86 (Linux Only):

>Same partition
Perhaps you can use Netraverse Win4Linux.
This software enable user to run ORIGINAL Windows on top of Linux (NOT emulation).

http://www.netraverse.com/

AFAIK most Linux distros don't support Write access to Windows NTFS partition.

>Faster HW
If you want to run Macintosh PowerPC application, you can do it using Emulators. But the emulation speed on Pentium IV 3.8 GHz is equal to 100 MHz PowerPC!

Perhaps if you use 200 GHz Diamond X86 CPU (temperature: several hundred degree), perhaps you can do PowerPC emulation faster than Dual G5 2.5 GHz! You should use several GB memory caches to feed the data into the CPU.

Today, most high end CPUs energy consumption is for HEAT, NOT for computation.
Intel, AMD plan to release slower CPU with dual core and less "waste of energy".

xenolinux eh

Postby snipes » Sat Dec 18, 2004 12:52 am

I dont see xenolinux on the LiveCD list.
im downloading it right now to try it. maybe there is a reason its not on the list. It sounds really interesing and I hope it has an inovative interface. the iso file was kinda hard to find.

Hi
I do not know if Xenolinux is a LiveCD. From the manual and documentation, there is no mention about LiveCD version.

The porting of BSD to Xen is stalled because lack of programmer. Perhaps in the future, there will be LiveDVD based on Xen with Linux, BSD, AROS, OpenBeOS, ReactOS, FreeDOS and other OS.

at this location I found a 1.2 version
http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/Research/SRG/netos/xen/downloads/XXxendemo-1.2.iso

and I really like the idea but I dont think my nforce2 chipset/Integrated NIC/Integrated Sound will be supported. I guess all I can do is try it out..

Hi
Perhaps Xen is more suitable for high end servers with SMP.
I am waiting for their BSD port or Windows XP port as a proof of concept.
Another great OS: VirtuOS from Katana.

This provide virtual OS using several PC connected together using Topspin Infiniband. You can run Linux on top of VirtuOS.

>Virtual Machine

Hi
Intel had announced new Virtual Machine technology: Vanderpool:

Intel Corporation is accelerating its broad industry efforts to deliver enhanced virtualization capabilities — codenamed Vanderpool — for Intel®-based clients and servers. The company has released its preliminary Vanderpool Technology External Architecture Specifications (EAS) to facilitate industry design collaboration and advance the pace and breadth of advancements in virtualization.

Virtualization allows a platform to run multiple operating systems and applications in independent partitions or “containers.” One physical compute system can function as multiple “virtual” systems. Vanderpool Technology can help improve future virtualization solutions.

im still around and looking for a minimal live cd with a emulator or virtualizer on it ;)

i thought maybe there might have been some development that someone has heard of that does this. i've learned a bit more about building linux systems so maybe i can do it myself. lol
anyone heard of anything like this?

im thinking of qemu and lfs

SLAX has unionFS, maybe you could download+install Qemu from the running SLAX LiveCD?

You may also want to check out the Xen Demo CD, it's not a minimal CD, in fact, it may require overburning or a DVD because it's 720 MB.

any news on this subject?

i'm also looking for a livecd with easy to use virtual machine.
the purpose is to run multiple server in it.

scene:
- boot the live cd and load the emulator (qemu/xen/??)
- boot a firewall (redwall/sentry/etc..??) in a virtual machine
- install servers (web/mail/proxy/etc...) into another vm
- boot desktop (dsl/puppy/etc..) into another vm
all running in one computer

is this possible?

imho, today pc (p4/3ghz/1gig ram/etc..)
way... too powerfull just for one simple job...

I think ADIOS can do this?

See Knoppix LiveCD from Japan:

http://unit.aist.go.jp/itri/knoppix/qemu/index-en.html

New KNOPPIX iso image includes "QEMU". It enables us to boot KNOPPIX as VirtualPC and VMware.

VMWARE had announced free Virtual Machine players for both Windows and Linux.

Is it possible to put this free player software with ordinary Linux distro or LiveCD Linux distro?

From ZDNET:
http://news.zdnet.com/2100-3513_22-5911749.html

VMware announced a free product Monday called VMware Player that makes it easier for people to try out the company's virtualization technology.
VMware specializes in software that lets multiple "virtual machines" run on the same computer, juggling multiple operating systems to improve efficiency, ease software development or make data centers more flexible. VMware Player is an application for Windows or Linux that runs those virtual machines.
Although people can't create virtual machines with VMware Player, they can use it to test virtual machines that have already have been created using the company's earlier products, Workstation, GSX Server or the top-end ESX Server.
One scenario in which the software could be useful is in evaluating software, already installed in pre-built virtual machines and tested in a harmless environment. VMware offers sample software at its VMware Technology Network.

Other virtual machine products:

1. OpenVZ

http://openvz.org/

"OpenVZ is an Operating System-level server virtualization solution, built on Linux. OpenVZ creates isolated, secure virtual private servers (VPSs) or virtual environments on a single physical server enabling better server utilization and ensuring that applications do not conflict."

2. Parallels / Hypervisor:

http://www.parallels.com/en/products/workstation/

Parallels Workstation 2.0 is the first desktop virtualization solution to include a lightweight hypervisor, a mature technology originally developed in the 1960s to maximize the power of large mainframes. Hypervisor technology dramatically improves virtual machine stability, security and performance by using a thin layer of software, inserted between the machine’s hardware and the primary operating system, to directly control some of the host machine’s hardware profiles and resources. It not only makes Parallels Workstation-powered virtual machines secure, stable and efficient, but also empowers users to immediately realize the benefits associated with Intel VT hardware virtualization architecture.
