Build a new distro by customizing one of some famous distro.

Hi, all..
I am beginner in Linux environment.
I have a plan to make a new distro by customizing one of some famous distro, e.g. Knoppix. I want to change the language from english to my languange, adding/remove some features, modifying the looks, etc. I know that one of my jobs is I have to rebuild new kernel from its resource.
How to doing this jobs? Can I know about the steps?
